The research agenda is divided into four domains. Domains A and B comprise projects dealing with the implementation aspects of the world model. Projects in domain A focus on issues concerning communications and security, whereas projects in domain B address issues of data modeling and data management. Project domain C combines projects working on the input and output of model information, therefore dealing with the "interface" of the federated world model to the real world. The tasks of these projects range from the retrieval of model information from sensors on one side to the presentation of information contained in the world model on the other side. Finally, project domain D comprises application-oriented projects whose research is based on the world model. In this domain there is also a project that is supposed to investigate the social aspects of the Nexus project by analyzing real applications. In the following, each project domain is briefly described. Each project in the table below is linked with a page describing it in greater detail.

Project Domain A

The main technical focuses of this project domain are the closely related topics of communications and security in mobile systems. Regarding communications two different directions are followed in research. The first one is concerned with the development of efficient and robust mechanisms enabling a mobile device to interact with the "world model" service. This includes the seamless integration of different network technologies as well as optimized access mechanisms based on caching and hoarding approaches. The second research direction deals with innovative communication concepts and protocols, which vitally rely on information stored in the world model. As far as security is concerned, questions of model-based security mechanisms and protection of model data are in the center of interest. The security needs of all participants are balanced based on the concept of multilateral security. Finally, aspects of modeling mobility and simulation techniques based on these mobility models are examined. This is the basis for the evaluation of protocols and optimization techniques developed in the Nexus project.

Project Domain B

The main task of this project domain is the provision of the "world model" service. The world model comprises location-based data and objects, which are made up of the partially proprietary data of different information providers. These are supplied to applications in a standardized representation and language. In the core of the model stationary and mobile objects of the real world as well as virtual objects serving as anchors for location-based information are represented and managed. Through this, the real world is enriched to an "Augmented World", where information resides at places and thus location-based applications and their users can access it there (e.g. by overlaying it with the real world in so called Augmented-Reality-Applications). Additional extensions of the model aim at describing its infrastructure, like network topologies, services or even whole applications. These descriptions provide a substantial foundation regarding openness and extensibility as well as adaptivity and self-organization. In order to be able to provide this information service it is necessary to solve many upcoming issues concerning system architecture, as well as federation, processing, consistency and updating of data. The projects in this domain address especially these topics. In addition to the bilateral networking described above and defined by each project, the comprehensive issues of modeling and consistency are dealt with in a working group that has been set up just for this purpose, and for which further projects do the preliminary work.

Project Domain C

The interfaces of the world model and of the provided services to the real world are quite manifold. Work in this project domain concentrates on input and output mechanisms with a certain spatial context. Location-based services are in need of methods for integrating relevant objects and their spatial relationship into the world model on the one hand. On the other hand they are in need of sensors to position a mobile system relatively to the model. Both aspects are subject to ongoing research, to which the projects in this domain contribute substantially. Regarding sensors it is intended to use primarily image data to support positioning and object recognition. In the outdoor area the analysis of 3D Data, e.g. in order to recognize buildings, requires new methods for semantic generalization based on sets of rules, neuronal networks, and data mining techniques. Inconsistencies originating from different sensors need to be resolved by using improved fusion algorithms that involve context knowledge. Finally, the presentation of objects of the world model in their spatial context (e.g. in Augmented-Reality-Applications) requires abstraction by simplifying geometries or by using icons in order to enable an interactive presentation on small devices featuring only a low-bandwidth mobile connection.

Project Domain D

Part of this project domain are two projects, which, as being application projects, can achieve their research goals only by utilizing the world model and the location-based services prototypically implemented in this centre of excellence. Goal of the "Smart Factory" is to decentralize management systems of manufacturing resources by employing intelligent tools, which are integrated into the world model through SMART-technology. The navigation and orientation aid for the blind is combining local measurements of size and color of an object with location-based information obtained from the world model in order to label it acoustically. The third project in this domain concentrates on evaluation of technologies and profound reflection of Nexus applications and their acceptance in view of the changed relation of the user to himself and the world through the use of the world model. Besides these project domains two working groups are established which work on topics that are important across all project domains. Firstly, this is the working group "modeling and consistency", and secondly, the working group "mobility and security".
